Automotive News Europe,

MG vehicles will reappear first in the UK next year and then in the US a year later, say Duke Hale, CEO of the newly formed MG Cars North America/Europe. Hale and a small group of employees in England are planning MG's rebirth in Europe and Asia.

In the coming three years, Chinese automaker Nanjing Automobile Group, which owns the MG brand, will launch a range of sedans produced in China and a modified version of the TF roadster made in the UK. Starting in early September 2008, a new US plant in Oklahoma will assemble the MG TF coupe from parts flown in from China.

Hale says the Oklahoma plant's initial output is expected to be 6,000 to 10,000 coupes a year. The plant is expected to build a full range of cars in addition to the coupe - three sedans and a roadster, by 2010, says Hale. The vehicles will be sold in the US and Europe. By 2009 or 2010, MG is forecasting US sales of about 100,000 units annually, Hale says.

MG will not be going upscale like BMW's Mini. MG is likely to be cross-shopped by consumers looking at Korean and Japanese cars, says Hale. MG wants to "provide a good brand experience and let people see that they can get value for their money," he says. Prices aren't set, but Hale envisions the range starting in the US at the mid-$20,000s (about €20,000) and moving up to $30,000-plus.

The biggest hurdle Hale may face is convincing buyers that MG has improved its quality, an issue that caused the brand's demise in the US. Sales were halted in 1980. In the J.D. Power and Associates 2005 UK customer satisfaction survey, MG Rover placed fifth from the bottom, significantly below the industry average. A J.D. Power spokesman says the TF roadster "performs significantly below the industry average on most measures, in particular on quality-related metrics."

Mike Dale, a retired Jaguar executive who once ran MG in the US, thinks the brand could be a winner. But Dale questions whether the TF is the right car to re-create the MG's emotional appeal in this market. He says it looks too much like a Toyota or a Honda.

But Hale says he thinks the MG brand has enough drawing power to justify his ambitious plans: "I will suggest to you MG is more fondly and better known in the US than Mini before it was launched."

EXCLUSIVE Americans storm off in row with Chinese over Rover
THE Chinese owners of the Longbridge car plant in Birmingham have had a spectacular fall-out with their American partners, it was claimed last night.
Sources say a team of managers from the USA who have been working in the Midlands for the past three months have been abruptly ordered to return home.
The decision follows an alleged rift between the Chinese and the Americans about the future direction of the joint venture.
The team from Global Oklahoma Motors is said to have become 'exasperated' with the Chinese way of doing business, which they saw as 'slow and bumbling'.
The split between the partners has placed another huge question mark over the future of Longbridge.
Last night, a source close to the Nanjing Automobile Corporation in the UK insisted that the Birmingham plant is safe, although the company itself was more inscrutable.
The Chinese company paid £50 million to buy MG Rover after the firm collapsed with the loss of 6,000 jobs in April 2005.
Nanjing Automobile has announced plans to resume production of the MGF sports car at Longbridge this spring with up to 1,000 jobs being created.
The company is building a factory in the city of Nanjing with the target of producing 200,000 cars a year and 250,000 engines for the booming Chinese market.
Meanwhile, MGFs are to be built at a new plant in Ardmore, Oklahoma, employing 350 workers. Work on the midwest factory is due to start later this year, with production lines running for the first time in 2008.
MG is a coveted marque in the USA and Canada, although the model will be built to higher specifications because of tougher exhaust emission laws.
The Sunday Mercury has learned that for the past three months about 30 managers, automotive engineers and accountants from the USA have been working and living in the West Midlands.
The purpose of the team is to liaise with Nanjing representatives in the UK.
The aim was to Westernise the joint venture because Chinese methods were felt to be staid and likely to do few favours for MG in the UK and the USA.
But the senior US staff have been summarily recalled amid claims that they found working with the Chinese impossible and their patience 'just ran out'.
One source said: "They just became exasperated at the way the Chinese work and felt there was no hope of change."
The Mercury has been told that a top-level mission from Oklahoma will be jetting into Britain soon for talks with Nanjing executives, although the exact purpose is unclear. Wes Stucky, president and chief executive of the Ardmore Development Authority, which owns the land on which the Oklahoma plant is to be built, admitted: "There have been difficulties between the partners.
"There are changes in the way the partnership will go forward but I am confident that the Ardmore facility will proceed as proposed.
"I don't know what implications, if any, there will be for the future of the Long-bridge plant in the UK."
A source close to Nanjing Automobile said: "These international partnerships are very complex and can be subject to change.
"But the current difficulties won't have any effect on what happens at Longbridge.
"Nanjing in China will be selling cars to China and the Far East. Nanjing in the UK will be selling MGFs in the UK and Europe, and Oklahoma Global Motors will sell in North America."
A Nanjing Automobile spokesman in the UK said: "The original understanding with the Oklahoma team remains. There have been some amendments and considerable discussions and they are ongoing."
Marc Nuttle, chairman of Oklahoma Global Motors, could not be reached for comment last night.

Industry: MG's US plans in disarray? 19 Mar 07 15:26  Exports - and assembly - of MG sports cars is still intended in the US, despite the departure of Duke Hale, the CEO of the company planning the venture.

Oklahoma Global Motors, a joint venture with MG's owner Nanjing Automotive, was to assemble MG TF2 coupes from pre-fabricated kits in Ardmore, Oklahoma, and distribute them to dealers.

Hale has left along with two other senior executives, allegedly because his ambitious plan for sales of 100,000 cars a year by 2010, with a full-range model line-up and 350 dealers, had been much-reduced. There are reports that a range of just two MG-branded cars will be offered - probably the TF2 coupe and roadster - instead of a five-car range to include a hybrid, as promised.

Sources have also suggested that there could be problems getting these cars, which are based on very elderly designs, to meet America's federal safety and emissions legislation.

MG sources still say that production of 20,000 cars (over two to three years) is still on the cards for Ardmore, however, along with 20,000 made in Longbridge. European sales are still said to be scheduled for June, with US sales from summer 2008. (Autoweek).

MG's Still Coming
Change in CEO hasn't detered sports car brand

By DIANA T. KURYLKO | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS

AutoWeek | Updated: 03/12/07, 1:52 pm et
An Oklahoma entrepreneur will try this month to complete plans to bring MG back to the United States despite the departure of his company's top executive.

Duke Hale has quit as CEO of Oklahoma Global Motors, the U.S. joint venture partner with China's Nanjing Automobile Group.

Last July, Marc Nuttle, the chief investor in Oklahoma Global Motors, announced a plan to combine MG TF coupe bodies from England with powertrains from Nanjing in Ardmore, Okla.

Nuttle says he expects to sign license agreements with Nanjing by March 31. He says bids Oklahoma Global is soliciting bids to build the kit plant in Oklahoma.

But the plan has been clouded by the departure of Hale and two top managers. They left the venture because they think its plans for the United States have been whittled down too much.

A source says: "The number of cars could be two or three rather than five because the designs are not contemporary or it may be too difficult to meet federal (emissions or safety) requirements. The cost may exceed what the benefit may be."

Hale and his team had envisioned making MG a full-range brand in the United States, selling about 100,000 cars per year by 2010 with about 350 dealerships.

But last week Nuttle said the original plan - to produce 20,000 cars in Ardmore and 20,000 more in Longbridge, England, combined over the next two to three years - is still on track.

The coupe is scheduled to go on sale in Europe in June and in the United States in summer 2008, says Nuttle.

He says he expects the United States to have "three or four models and a hybrid car and 50 dealers at launch."

Nuttle says he won't replace Hale. John English, president of Oklahoma Global Motors, is running MG in the United States. English is former president of Lotus Cars USA Inc.

Hale was previously COO of Isuzu Motors America Inc., vice president of sales for Mazda North American Operations, and head of sales and marketing for Volvo Cars North America.

Un accord final devrait bientôt intervenir pour la production des MG aux U.S.A., selon Marc NUTTLE l'un des principaux investisseurs dans la future usine d'Oklahoma.

"Oklahoma investor: MG deal is alive

Diana T. Kurylko | Automotive News / March 28, 2007 - 1:51 pm

MG cars will be built in Oklahoma and final licensing agreements are nearly complete, says Marc Nuttle, the chief investor in Oklahoma Global Motors.

Nuttle says he recently returned from weeklong negotiations in China with the Nanjing Automobile Group, which owns the MG brand. He denied reports from the United Kingdom and broadcast by National Public Radio in the United States saying the Oklahoma project is dead.

"The individual who spoke with NPR is not a senior member of the team working with Oklahoma Global Motors and is not currently involved in moving the project forward," Nuttle said in a statement.

"Representatives from NAC MG in the U.K. have confirmed that his statement was not an official announcement by the company and reflected his own opinion and not that of management."
